The Meaning of Jade in China

No material carries more weight in Chinese culture than jade. Confucius said a gentleman's virtues are like jade.

More than a stone

For centuries jade stood for the qualities a person should aspire to — purity, restraint, quiet strength. To give jade was to wish someone well; to wear it was to be reminded of who you meant to be. That is why a jade Guanyin is never merely decorative — it is a small blessing set on a shelf.

Two kinds you'll meet

Jadeite (翡翠), the greener, more translucent stone, is favoured for fine figurines and jewellery. Nephrite (软玉), warmer and oilier in lustre, is the "Hetian" jade of the north — the material of scholar's objects like the Hetian jade mountain, a miniature landscape to rest the eye.

What a jade ornament says

Placed in a home, jade says: slow down, keep what matters, let things be beautiful without being loud. It is the calmest object we sell — and often the one people keep for a lifetime.
